All I want for Christmas...

Since we've been together, Kyle and I have made a tradition of only spending $50 on each other for Christmas. As a newly married couple, we have savings and retirement goals we want to meet (sexy, baby) and regularly make big ticket purchases together throughout the year. When Christmas rolls around, we don't feel the need to spend lavishly and setting a budget for ourselves forces us to be creative when it comes time for gift giving.

Buuuuut, I don't remember Santa having a budget, so if he's reading, here are my top 5  gifts that ye old St. Nick can leave in my stocking:

Since taking photos with an actual camera is so old school and I exclusively snap pics with my iPhone, I find myself rarely printing any photos. I'm dating myself here, divas, but back in the day I was visiting Walgreens on the regular to print sleeves and sleeves of photos. Sadly, although I literally have thousands of photos saved on my phone, I never print them. This little gadget would make printing pics easy and efficient.

I die over how cute this bike is. I'm not the most active gal in the world, but I bet I would be if I had this cute cruiser. Can't you just see me zooming down the streets of Sin City on this little number?

These stylish little totes would help keep me organized and keep my jewels and shoes in good condition when I travel.

4. Kate Spade holiday ensemble and earrings

I love all things Kate Spade, but this holiday ensemble and earrings are perfect for the holidays or a night out at the Smith Center.

5. An original Banksy

Ok, so I know this one is a long shot, but Santa doesn't have a budget, remember?

Diva's, I'm Back!

Diva’s, listen, I know it’s been a while. And if you’re keeping track, “a while” could also mean “two years”. Yikes. A few things have transpired since we last spoke in (gulp) February 2013. Actually that was the month that everything changed.

When I last posted, I was partaking in what would be my final Soulard Mardi Gras as a citizen of St. Louis. But of course, I didn’t know that then. I didn’t know that in a few weeks I’d reconnect with my high school sweetheart. I didn’t know that we’d meet for dinner and zing! that would be the end of the single life for me (can I get an Amen?!). I didn’t know that after that fateful dinner, we’d talk or Facetime every night until April, when I visited Las Vegas a second time. I didn’t know that I’d quit my job, pack up my beloved townhouse in Soulard, and move from St. Louis to Las Vegas. And, you can bet all the water in the Bellagio fountains that I definitely didn’t know that we’d be married in 2015! There’s so much more to our story and I plan to document it here, but you can read more about us on The Knot.

What I do know, however, is that I miss blogging. I miss having a little spot to document my life. I still love finding the best restaurants in town and reading good books and, now, I have a partner in crime to experience all of it with.

This little blog has undergone a bit of an overhaul and I’m still tweaking it and will possibly even completely change the template, but I’m ready to get back to blogging. I have some good posts lined up, so as my bio suggests, sit back, bring some champs and read awhile.

2012 - A Year in Review

Miss last year’s Year in Review? Catch up on 2011 here.

January:
Had fun turning 31 at Mosaic.

February:
Got artsy at the first annual Arty Party at the Four Seasons St. Louis with artist Jeff Kapfer.

For the first time in years, I celebrated Soulard Mardi Gras by not celebrating. I stayed in, stayed warm, and “Laissez les bons temps rouler” by watching Whitney Houston’s funeral. And for the record Whitney, crack is whack.

March:
Flew south for a work conference in Orlando and met these two reality show cuties:
Tenley Molzahn, Kiptyn Locke, & me.
April:
Surprised Laura with a birthday party at her new home in the ‘burbs.

Took in a fashion show with Sylvia benefitting the Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition at [RE]Fresh – A Fashion Coalition in Brentwood.

May:
Organized our first ever book club with this steamy read:

Beat the heat to watch my oldest nephew graduate from high school.

Kicked off The Year of The Wedding with a St. Louis Shower for Stessie.

June:
Ate, drank, and celebrated Jessica and John’s engagement with a shower at Montelle Winery.

Not every bride-to-be gets two St. Louis celebrations in one month – but Jessica did with a night out in Soulard.

July:
Headed West for my first trip to Sin City. We ate here, drank a $36 cocktail here, and danced the night away here…all without gambling a penny!

August:
Met sweet baby Charlotte for the first time.

Ate here and closed 360 down with a red and black themed Bachelorette Party for Jessica.

Celebrated one wedding shower and one wedding reception on the same day for these two cute cousins:

After a two year hiatus, I re-started my classes towards a MA in Marketing here and all social life came to a screeching halt.

With a Rehearsal Dinner here and their wedding festivities here, we celebrated Stessie & Brian’s wedding in true St. Louis style.

Welcomed Billy to St. Louis with drinks here and dinner here during Downtown Restaurant Week.

September:
Took in a free concert by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra on Art Hill.

Said adios to our St. Louis senorita, Erin, with a Going Away Party here.

Celebrated Donna’s 30th birthday with a surprise party here.

Spent the weekend in Overland Park celebrating Lauren and Andrew’s wedding – Kansas style!

October:
Ended The Year of The Wedding on the campus of West Point with the marriage of Jessica and John.

Headed to the Lone Star State twice this month for work and saw a Texas rodeo in San Antonio and one of the most haunted streets in America, Hell’s Half Mile, in Ft. Worth.

Took in a night of theatre with Les Mis at the Fabulous Fox.

November:
Satisfied my inner Twihard by seeing this movie. After a year's wait, it did not disappoint!

December:
Met with fellow social media gals at the STL Social Girls Holiday Happy Hour organized by Danni at Plush.

Celebrated the impending birth of the Royal baby here. Long live the King…or Queen!

Won the first annual Ugly Sweater Party hosted by Laura and Jacob. When I play, I play to win!

Winter Reads

Despite the weather reports predicting snow on Christmas night and all of the forecasters in “Storm Mode”, it remained cold in the St. Louis metro area, but with nary a snowflake in site. From my city to yours, I hope you had a fabulous holiday season – with or without snow.

During the cold winter months, there’s nothing I like better than to stay home, sip my favorite tea (or wine, who am I kidding?), and curl up with a good book. I’m always on the hunt for my next great literary escape and I definitely found it with these three Winter Reads:

Of all the books I’ve read in the past year, Lunch in Paris: A Love Story with Recipes has been one of my absolute favorites. Author Elizabeth Bard is an American girl living in London when she meets the beau of her dreams, gets married, moves to the City of Lights and begins a love story with her husband, Paris, and fabulous French food. Lunch in Paris is similar to Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love but with less praying and a lot more eating. Need to escape the dreary winter days? Elizabeth Bard proves there’s no better place to do it than Paris.

I bought The Weird Sisters while on a long layover at JFK. Pushing the People Magazine and US Weekly aside*, I bought this debut novel from author Eleanor Brown and headed for my gate. Based on three sisters who return to their childhood home all for different reasons, The Weird Sisters follows Cordelia, Rose, and Bianca Andreas as they follow life paths as different as their personalities.  What’s in a name? The title, The Weird Sisters, comes from a line in Macbeth and each of the sister’s names comes from a different Shakespearean character. From the plural narrative, to Shakespeare’s quotes woven throughout the storyline, The Weird Sisters shows that all roads, no matter how weird, lead home.

I found The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club last winter in the sale section of Barnes & Noble. The cover alone was enough to entice me in and I’ve enjoyed reading it this winter just as much as last. From British author Gil McNeil comes the story of Jo Mackenzie, a television producer who’s forced to move from London to the seaside town of Broadgate Bay. Going from high-powered television producer (or “telly”, if we’re being British) to the manager of a small-town yarn shop proves an interesting adjustment for Jo, her two young sons and the cast of characters who loop their way through the yarn shop door. ** Whether you’re an anglophile like I am or not, you’ll love hunkering down this winter with The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club.

Any good Winter Reads on your bookshelves lately? If so, let me know!

*Unrelated: I spotted both Montel Williams at the airport and three cast members from The Jersey Shore on a night out in Manhattan on this trip. D-List Celebrity sightings FTW!

**Loop. See what I did there? Any knitters in the audience? Anyone?

School Days

I'll be the first to admit that I love school, always have. With the exception of a hideous “first day of high school outfit” (while no photographic evidence exists of this monstrosity, rest assured, my mother sent me to a brand new high school wearing Umbro shorts, a white Hanes t-shirt with "GCHS” stitched on the front, and a brand new pair of Keds. How I wasn’t shoved into a locker is beyond me.) and braces worn throughout all FOUR years of high school (whose bright idea was that, Dr. Bauer?), my school days were filled with friends, fun, and Flags.

Kindergarten through second grade, I attended St. Mary’s-St. Mark’s Catholic School in Madison, Illinois. A Polish Franciscan parish, the grade school was headed by Sr. Mary John and employed several Franciscan nuns as teachers. Our grade school was unique in that there were two separate schools located in two towns for two separate age groups. Kindergarten through fifth graders attended St. Mary’s in Madison and sixth through eighth graders attended St. Mark’s school and parish in Venice, Illinois. I was a student in the last second grade class to make our First Holy Communion at St. Mary’s before the school was permanently closed in 1988 and demolished a few years later. A vacant lot is all that exists now, but for the students who passed through the heavy wooden doors, memories of “Balloon Day”, the city-wide Halloween parade, and recess spent on the front asphalt lot live on.
Little Linda, on my first day of school, ca. 1989

Third through eighth grade took me to St. Elizabeth’s School in Granite City, Illinois where I played volleyball, basketball (horribly), and cheered on the Royals. I was Confirmed with the name “Victoria” here, played Tom Sawyer in our eighth grade class production and graduated with a class size numbering only in the 20’s. Entering high school in 1995 into a school with 1,200 students, I was wholly unprepared to deal with lockers, a confusing campus map, and hordes of students getting from one classroom to the next.

I was a third generation Granite City Warrior, walking the halls like my mother and grandfather did before me. As a student in the 1950’s, my mom was the Present of the Future Homemakers Society. With my lack of cooking and cleaning skills, that’s a club I surely wouldn’t be accepted into! Instead, I became a member of the Red Peppers, a spirit club that attended all of the home football and basketball games until I tried out and made the award-winning Marching Warriors as a member of the Color Guard. Four years of band camp, Homecoming “mums”, May Carousel, and friendships flew by and before I knew it, I was the first person in my family bound for college.

Unsure of what I wanted to major in and armed with a two year scholarship, I attended Southwestern Illinois College where I was a member of the College Activities Board, got used to not hearing bells call me to every class, and ventured away from home for the first time when I was accepted into the Walt Disney World College Program to “live, earn, and learn” at the Happiest Place on Earth. Armed with my AA, I headed to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where I worked two jobs to pay my way through school, including a semester spent studying in Salzburg, Austria and graduated in 2004 with a BS in Speech Communication.

Earning my "Ducktorate Degree" during the Walt Disney World College Program.

Much has changed since my school days first began in 1986. If you’re wondering where I’ve gone to lately or why I’m late posting a New Restaurant Wednesday post (three in the line up!), I’m probably at the Emerson Library or the East Academic Building of the George Herbert Walker School of Business at Webster University or spending hours draining Panera of their Hazelnut coffee while putting together marketing plans and conducting market research.

Just another "school day" studying at Panera.

Four classes, one Capstone, and one more year until I graduate with my MA in Marketing and mark the end of my school days…for now.

Photo Friday: Goin' to the Chapel

This Saturday, my family will gather to celebrate at my cousin Ben’s wedding reception. Ben and his bride were married a few weeks ago on the beaches of Gulf Shores, so this weekend will be one big celebration full of food, fun, and more than a few polkas.

Ben is my oldest second cousin and the first of my grandparents’ great grandchildren to get married (another great grandchild is getting married in September and another in May 2013!) I vividly remember when Ben was born because I was sure he was going to steal my spotlight (I was not about to let that happen!) and I nervously asked my grandmother if she was still going to love me after he was born. She reassured me that she would, of course, and Ben grew from that tiny baby boy to a star soccer player to a grown-up CPA.
